Choosing an HVAC Contractor: Questions That Matter
The right questions separate a contractor who sizes and installs correctly from one who swaps boxes. Here's what to ask.
4 min read
Two quotes for "a new system" can mean completely different work. The difference shows up years later in your comfort and your bills. A few questions tell you which kind of contractor you're talking to.
Questions worth asking
- "Will you run a load calculation?" If sizing comes from your square footage or your old unit, you'll likely inherit the same oversized, humidity-prone setup.
- "Will you check my ductwork?" New equipment on bad ducts underperforms. The ducts should be part of the conversation.
- "Is the price flat-rate and in writing before work starts?" You should know the number up front — no mystery diagnostic surprises.
- "Are you licensed and insured?" In Alabama, ask for the license number.
- "What happens if there's a problem after install?" A real company stands behind the work.
Red flags
High-pressure sales, a push toward the biggest unit, vague pricing, or a refusal to look at the whole house are all signs to keep looking. The goal isn't the cheapest quote or the biggest box — it's the system that's right for your home and a team that will stand behind it.
