When a system can't keep up, it's tempting to assume the answer is a bigger one. But in heating and cooling, bigger is usually worse — and it's the single most common mistake we find in Central Alabama homes.
What an oversized system actually does
An air conditioner does two jobs: it cools the air and it pulls humidity out of it. An oversized unit blasts the air cold so quickly that it shuts off before it ever removes much moisture. The result is a home that feels cold and clammy at the same time — and a thermostat that's satisfied while you're not.
That rapid on-off pattern is called short-cycling. Beyond comfort, it drives up your power bill, puts extra wear on expensive components, and shortens the life of the equipment. Ironically, the 'more powerful' system often costs more to run and dies sooner than a right-sized one.
How correct sizing is done
Proper sizing isn't a guess based on square footage or 'a ton per 500 square feet.' It comes from a load calculation — an industry method (Manual J) that accounts for your home's insulation, windows, orientation, ductwork, and air leakage. The number that comes out is the capacity your home actually needs to stay comfortable in our climate.
We pair that calculation with a look at your whole house. A system can be sized perfectly and still underperform if the ductwork is leaky or undersized, so we evaluate airflow at the same time. The goal is comfort in every room — not just a satisfied thermostat near the hallway.
