Repair or Replace? How to Decide on Your AC

Not every breakdown means it's time for a new system — and not every repair is worth the money. Here's how we think about the repair-vs-replace decision.

When your air conditioner quits, the first question is usually: do I fix it or replace it? It's a real decision with real money attached, and the honest answer depends on a few specific factors — not a sales quota.

Consider the age

Most central systems last about 12–15 years with good maintenance. If your unit is under about 10 years old and the repair is straightforward, fixing it is usually the smart move. Once a system is past that window, repairs tend to add up and efficiency has already dropped, so replacement starts to make more sense.

Weigh the repair cost

A useful rule of thumb: if a single repair costs more than about a third of a new system — especially on older equipment — replacement is often the better long-term value. Big-ticket failures like a compressor or a leaking evaporator coil on an aging unit are common tipping points.

Refrigerant type matters too. Older systems may use refrigerants that are being phased out and have become expensive, which can quietly tip the math toward replacement.

Think about comfort and bills

If your system was never sized correctly, or your bills keep climbing while certain rooms never get comfortable, a repair only buys you more of the same problem. Replacing with a right-sized, higher-efficiency system can fix the comfort issue and lower your operating cost at once.

Our promise

When we come out, we'll give you a straight recommendation — repair or replace — with the reasoning and a flat-rate price in writing. If a repair makes sense, we'll repair it. If replacement is genuinely the better value, we'll show you the math. The decision is always yours.
